Home Renovation Do’s and Don’ts

Home Renovation Do’s and Don’ts

January, 2020

It can be very easy to get caught up in home renovations and start running away with yourself. It’s a very exciting project for anyone, but you want to make sure you keep your budget in mind at all times.

Below is a list of tips and tricks on how to keep on track during home renovations:

Do Measure Everything:

When installing new flooring or cabinets, it’s vital that you have the correct measurements otherwise the material won’t fit in the space.

Go room by room, take wall measurements, floor measurements, door & window measurements, and anything else you’re looking to renovate.

Don’t Hate Dust:

Like it or not, dust will get everywhere during a home renovation, and there is nothing you can do about it. Embrace the dust and invest in a good hoover – it won’t be around forever!

Do Be Realistic About Costs:

Budget, budget, budget! Always expect that the project will be more expensive than you initially thought. Complications could arise, or the renovation could simply take longer than anticipated. Set aside a sum of money to use in case you go over-budget, this way you can always be prepared.

Don’t Paint First:

Painting your walls and other surfaces should be the final step in any renovation. Of course it’s exciting to browse colour-schemes in the beginning, however you have to keep in mind that there is a lot to do before this step. This includes floor installation, radiator fittings, socket placements, and skirting board fittings, to name a few.

Do Install Floors First:

The floor is often described as the foundation of any renovation project. As soon as the floor is installed, you can begin fitting cabinets, moving furniture, and painting walls. Just make sure that you cover the floors and put tape over the skirting before you start painting!

Don’t Throw Away Receipts:

You need to keep receipts in order to keep a record of what you’ve purchased and who you’ve hired. This is important just in case you need to return anything, or in case anything goes wrong.

Do Be Respectful:

Renovating your space is stressful, there is no sugar-coating it. If you’re undergoing the project with your partner, there may well be arguments. Also, if a builder or decorator doesn’t quite see your vision, this can be another irritating situation. However, remember you won’t be living in a building site forever. Be kind and respectful to workers, as you never know when you may need their services again.

Don’t Forget To Breathe:

It’s easy to become completely wrapped up in the project, after all, you’ll probably be living at the site. However, it’s important to take some time for yourself. Try to have one room which is renovation-free so you can escape if you need to. If this isn’t possible, see if you can stay with friends or family for a night. Failing this, take a long walk or a drive to clear your mind.

If the going gets tough, just sit back and visualise what the house will look like when it’s finished. Remind yourself that it’ll all be worth it in the end.
